Hi all,

Just found this forum and seems like the place to be.

I am considering buying a Truck to build to cure boredom etc over the fall and into the winter. I have a few questions though that I hope someone will be able to answer;

I am thinking about a King Hauler, how long is the build?

Are there any pitfalls or parts to buy at the same time as the kit?

Having watched the videos etc and scoured the parts catalogue I would like to add a Trailer, Lights Multi-function unit etc, thoughts on this equipment?

I have built a lot of models over the years and also had mechanical radio control cars and helis. The trucks seem to marry up the scale and function sides pretty well hence my choice. My main reservation is that I will build the truck in a couple of evenings and then be bored..... So if anyone can chime in here and help me out I would really appreciate it.

hi
i dont have the king yet but i do have the aeromax, which is a similer size. its hard to put a time on the bulid as it depends on your skill and practice. they are pretty simple to build, just follow the instructions through.
personaly i cant coment on the MFU, i have not used one yet. i have put lights in one though and i'd say its worth it, really brings abit of life to it.

things to buy at the same time as the kit, well if you dont have it already, get the radio as the servos need to go in early in most of the trucks and buy your paint, then you are not waiting for it.

a trailer, yeah you got to have one of them, great fun tryin to reverse it. myself i think the pole trailer would look good on the king, prehaps with logs not pipes on? or my fav is the tanker.....still saving for that.

hope this has helped you abit, feel free to message me questions. if your interested my models are on this site http://neil22.weebly.com

i to build the trucks because they have scale and function....i like the engenering in the 3speed box.

I would get everthing to build the tractor at one time if you can afford. Trailer can be bought when you get the money and after you get the tractor complete. It also lets you get hooked a little harder in deciding if you want a trailer or another tractor :) You really need to think about ways to slow the tractor down as they are way too fast with a stock motor. Lathe motors are nice but you lose all kinds of torque with them. Gear reduction units are the way to go but do require some mechanical knowledge to install. I had to put one in my military King Hauler as the lathe motor was nice but lacked any kind of torque.

:Tamiya1:I just bought my second King Hauler to make into a tri axle dumptruck. It would be a good idea to at least get the 2 servos for the shifting and steering as they are used in the first step of the biuld. TAMIYA also sends a seperat sheat of paper advising you to use the futaba ATTACK-4WD(T4VWD) and not the new (T4GWD) if you are going to use the MFU, as the (T4GWD) uses a click tuch trim and the (T4VWD) uses a volume trim. They say the (T4GWD) will work but the (T4VWD) will work easier. I personaly do not have a MFU in a semi but I do have one in my tank and can see how it would be easier to use the (T4VWD). I have both radios the 2 main diferences is the click tuch trim and 4 model memory on the (T4GWD) compared to one model memory and volume trim on the (T4VWD). Once you see how a MFU works you will see how the trim type will make a difference. Absolutly get a trailer or make your own.

hi i am looking at starting my first custom build and i need to know where i can find a few parts

first of all i need to know if the tires on the King Hauler trailer are 1.9's? if so where can i order just the Tires and wheels? also how much would they cost? i need 20 duals.

i also need to know where i can find a set of HET/HMMT/PLS tires and wheels as a 2.2. if you dont know what these trucks are then ask they are built by OshKosh for the us military. also there is a truck here that is the M983 that is another version of these same trucks

also i dont know the exact size of the axles i will need, so does anyone know where i can get varying sizes of axles that could go up to about 12 inches total tire width? and be able to run triple axle in the rear. also all axles will need to be able to steer. locked or unlocked diffs will not matter.

can anyone tell me if there is a place i can get bodies made to order from photos in lexan? if not how about some tutorials on how to make one?

and where can i send some schematics to have a trailer bed made with a cnc machine and how much would that cost? for about a 2 foot long trailer that is about 1 1/2 inches tall and about a foot wide give or take 3 inches just the frame. plastic would be best for the trailer given its size.

also can i order the 3 speed trans from the King Hauler with out the truck?

thanx again and i hope i dont sound totally insane.

The semi tires are a bit smaller than 1.9 . TAMIAUSA and gardentrucking.com have the tires and rims. The rims are sold as an inner and an outer (2) rims for around $10 and the tires are sold in pairs for $12 so $45 for 1 axle. Semi axles are 7" from out side tire to out side tire but they do not turn. F350m axls are 8" from out side to out side but they do turn as for 12" wide axle ??. Check ebay for the trans it will be cheaper an easier than ordering all of the parts . joesrctrukstop ebay store would be a good place to try and find tires, rims, trans, and axles. As far as the rest maby somebody else has some good ideas.

i did some more checking on the exact axle length i will need and it will come out to about 10 in. from outside tire to outside tire. also for the axles i will need the front tandem twice, and only 2 of the axles will actually need to be able to turn. the wheels that will go on these axles will not be duals, just singles. as for the tires i will be needing a 1.7 inch wheel and the street tires for it. and for the truck 2 would be best but could settle for 2.2. also this build will be a 1/10th scale.

i am also posting 2 pics of what i want to build, yes they are two different trucks and trailers, i just haven't decided which one i will build. and thanx again

It will depend a bit on your personality type. Are you a "builder / tinkerer" or a "let's go out and bash it" sort of person?

If you are more the tinkerer-type, a Tamiya hauler will suit you well. You have likely seen the unique builds in the galleries. There are many routes to go; all-wheel-drive, Peterbuilt conversion, trials truck, detailed scaler, full option, motorized parts, light kits......the modification process never ends.
