Hi, Just getting back into RC cars, after being away for about 15 or so years.

I have just bought a Toyota Hugh-lift and it came with radion, battery, chrager, etc, etc.

I am ok with the build, it look fairly straighforward by the look of the Tamiya manual.

However........ I am just trying to get my head around wich channel each funtion will go on. I am not planning on using an MFU and being used to stick controllers, that is what I went for.

The setup seems quite normal: up/down and left/right self centering on the right stick and left/right self centering and up/down non centering on the left stick.

Which one is used for the gears??? Sorry if it sounds a bit bog basic but the instructions make no reference to this...........

Honestly, you can do it which ever way you want since you are not going to get an MFU. Whichever way feels comfortable. Some put the gears and forward/backwards on the same stick and steering on the other. Others, like me, put the forward/backwards and the steering on one stick and the gears on the other.

Thanks for the help. Just wanted to make sure I did not do anything too stupid!

Been away from RC for so long - everything has changed!

Wish I had kept my old XR311 when I was 10 though lol......

McFig, I dare say most put the gears on the left sticks X-axis and the throttle on the left sticks Y-axis. Steering the goes on the right stick's X-axis. Probably not so much because that is what Tamiya suggests in the manuals but rather because that way the layout resembles a regular two channel stick-type transmitter the most.

I agree with you when you say that you can set it up anyway you like. This is true even if you install the MFU as long as you are aware of which channel will operate what.

Davey_C, if you browse the net on this topic you will find that many users change the left stick so that the Y-axis (throttle) is self centering and the X-axis for the gears is not. That way your truck stops when you let go of the stick but you need not hold the stick for the truck to stay in gear.

Maybe most, maybe some. Who knows. Never took a survey, so I'm sure you are correct.

You were talking about mod'ing the left stick so it won't self center, thats why I put the gears on the right. No moding and it feels more like a car to me. The left Y-axis is my gas/break/reverse and the X-axis is my steering. Then my right stick is my gear shift and it stays where I put it. Its just the way I like it.

And I don't think you can set it up any way you want if you have the MFU unit because it is programed to respond to certain commands for the horn, lights, etc. And I would think if you change that up you might not be able to do all those things.

I have seen pics of radio gear with shift gaits. Where can I get one?
