Hello I am about as green as they come. I have been wanting one of these trucks for a while now and I finally got one. I just bought a Mercedes Benz 1850L on evil bay.

My preference is for military trucks and that is why as soon as my new rig arrives it is going to get bashed into a Mercedes Atego 1828 which is the military version of the the 1850L. It is sort of like a Unimog on steroids.

A 4x4 conversion may be down the road but I would like to start by getting it looking more off road worthy and one of the first things I would like to deal with is the tires. One option is the off road tires from garden trucking but I have a set of BFG Mud Terrains from a Toyota Prerunner and I would like to fit these tires on the semi wheels. the 1828 Atego trucks usually have single tire rear wheels instead of duallies so I would either mount only one tire on each wheel or modify the rear wheels if that looked strange, or use front wheels on the rear axle with spacers to keep the track width the same.

So the question: is it possible to squeeze the BFG Mud Terrains on the semi wheels? Perhaps by modifying the tires or wheels-- or just by stretching them on? Thanks in advance for any info.

dont know about the front wheels, (still looking for compatable rims), but I have been using Hummer or Hilux rims and tires as a super-single rim/tire combo on my trailers and dollies. They do require a spacer, I've found that a tamiya 1150-type brass bush works great as a spacer..the hummer rim looks just about right as a 'military' style...

isn't these toyota tires 1.9"?
if so, just grab a set of wheels from the tamiya hummer
not exact, but it would do the job
the front axle getting converted to a powered axle so the 12mm hubs will be all around

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure I want to mess with doing a powered front axle yet. What type of hub does the stock front axle on these rigs have? Would it be possible to adapt a hummer wheel to the stock (non powered) front axle? I do have access to machine tools if that helps so I can make various adapters and spacers.

I just ordered six hummer wheels from a guy on ebay-- enough for both axles and a spare tire.

Regards,

Eric

the fronts of the non-powered axle is 2 bearings
to put the hummer wheels on the front, you need to have the 12mm hub
this is on the powered axles
you can adapt the TLT-1 axle to the front of the truck using F-350 springs
if you dont have access to TLT, you can go with the F-350 axles which are a tad larger but bolts up
you will also need the powertrain going forward like the F-350 transmission and driveshaft
in other words, get an F-350 for the parts and you got a quick easy conversion
