hello.everybody im new to this great 3 speed tamiya lover's site and im already in need of help from ya'll.
my problem is i bought a hilux i think?,maybe a blazer i dont know the body is missing.the tranny has a RS-540SD BLACK SPRINT 16,300RPM.i removed it and it's missing the pinion:[ the motor still works fine and i don't want to damage the tranny by using any pinion?.also the tranny might be first generation,it has a solid
brass idler gear all the other tranny's iv'e looked up in forum's have the plastic one.hope someone can help
me.what size? and pitch? did the 540sd have or what pinions did tamiya use on the hilux's motor's.thanks

its a slow board but if you still need info the pinion is 32 pitch, if it is of the highlift series the older toyota brusier/heliux/blaser i dont recall but im sure they are 32 pitch as well.Size of pinion wont really matter but it will effect speed, I would count spur gear and try to keep gear ratio to a 3.55 or so (pinion / spur = x)

The wrong gear ratio won't hurt the transmission, but the wrong pitch pinion gear sure will. Tamiya uses 32 metric pitch gears. Only use genuine Tamiya parts, or aftermarket 32 metric pitch gears like those available from Robinson Racing.
When gearing a motor, you need to gear it so it does not overheat. Choose your gear based on how hot the motor gets. You don't want any one part of the motor. battery, or speed control combination to run hotter than the other. Too much gear will overheat the engine. Too little gear can overheat the speed control. Choose a gear that allows everything to operate at approx. the same temperature. That = efficiency.

Thanks,i will look in to the robinson racing gears.right know my tranny is disasembled
and iv'e cleaned it up really good.do any of you out there have any suggestion's on what
process if any that i can i do to get that chrome like finish on the tranny case and axles
if any that is; to avoid the high cost of chroming.im new to 3 speed and all advice is appreciated i had know idea these tamiya 3speed truck's wer'e so expensive let alone so
rare.my goal is to get it to it's original condition as possible and run it!.

funny i swappedd out to 48 pitch spur and pinion and everything runs great less noise also.noise was my main reason for doing this of course not better run time or speed i might say.
