Toyota Hilux
From Wikipedia

In North America the Hilux saw the use of four wheel drive. It had a solid front axle and leaf suspension. The body saw a redesign that included single round headlights and a less complex body. These trucks became known as first generation 4WDs.

In 1981 a vehicle development agreement was established between Toyota, Winnebago Industries and two other aftermarket customizers. This was to allow Toyota to enter the SUV market in North America. The vehicles which resulted from this collaboration were the Trekker (Winnebago), Wolverine, and the Trailblazer (Griffith). All three used the Hilux 4x4 RV cab and chassis, and an all-fiberglass rear section (the Trailblazer had a steel bed with a fiberglass top). There were at least 1,500 Trekkers, 400 Trailblazers and an unknown number of Wolverines sold in North America. Research and development work on the Trekker lead to the development of the 4Runner, which was released in 1984.

Thanks for looking

Okay, I am just about ready to tear into this vehicle and do a complete restoration with a few key upgrades and modifications along the way. I want to flip the u-bolts so they are not hanging down, so this is probably a good place to start. I am going to have to make my own hats to sit on top of the leaf spring... I think I have the correct material for them, Sooooo it is time to make some aluminum chips fly. :omg:

The u-bolts sound interesting. Looking forward to some pics of that.

Thanks McFig. Did a bunch of mods today. Took a few photos along the way. Lets start with the custom hats I made to flip the U-bolts. I made the hats out of 1/16 inch thick extruded aluminum.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4026/4498357887_04436cf537_b.jpg

Hats are finished. Took the rear end out of the truck and removed the spring packs, along with all the hardware. I decided to use a set of soft High-Lift leafs from RC4WD that are adjustable and will generate some lift. The front tires rub the fenders when turning at full lock, so the extra lift will stop that.

After removing the axle I realized that the previous owner had installed bearings in the truck... NICE.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the stock Bruiser spring pack (top) and the High-Lift (bottom).

Here are the assembled leaf packs which are now ready to be installed.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4021/4498367159_f3fe026003_b.jpg

I also replaced the stock plastic shock mount with some alloy ones from Bruiser Builder. When I re-assembled the rear suspension, I am now able to flip the U-bolts up-side-down. No more hang-ups on the U-bolts.

U-bolt flip on the rear axle complete.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2785/4498993784_12597b58ab.jpg

I repeated the process for the front end. When you do this mod, the front skid plate cannot be re-attatched. Front and Rear end are now completed.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4031/4498367489_db0c8e70f6.jpg

Below is the finished front end. While I had the truck apart I installed a billet steering arm from Bruiser Builder to tighten up the steering and I also moved the steering drag-link above the axle to keep it from getting bent.

Well, I did need some new parts for my truck. The bushings for the transmission mounts are blown out and the transmission plugs were missing, so I ordered some alloy hop-ups and reproduction parts from Bruiser Builder.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2791/4498806329_a16429dbb6_m.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4045/4499441522_d3a9e959f0_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2752/4499441542_c820cc30ef_m.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4036/4499441578_d3d9b17e8b_m.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4045/4499441596_50c6a2e195_m.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4035/4498806457_d562a312a9_m.jpg

I ended up getting a repro replacement grommet set, a repro transmission plug set, a repro shock boot set, an aluminum lower shock mount set, an aluminum steering belcrank, and an aluminum one piece spur gear.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4052/4494731134_ca95f3e8bf.jpg

When I received the truck, the front rims had some of the chrome flaking off and I noticed one of the original tires had a large split on the inside bead, so I started searching for replacements and I did not have to search very long.
I found a mint set on ebay. I bookmarked it, waited until the last second, put in my bid... lucked out and won them.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4023/4498869183_cf67e5a9e9_o.jpg

This truck has it's share of small boo-boo's and rough spots. At some point someone took a saw to the battery tray and removed the sides for some unknown reason, so I bought a used replacement radio box. The same guy was selling the front motor mount and just for laughs I checked mine, and sure enough, It is missing the FRP spacer that goes in-between the motor and the bracket. I ended up buying that piece from him too. Let the restoration begin...

Brand new servos are installed and adjusted. Speed control is wired and working. Also installed a brand new receiver, crystal, receiver battery, and switch.

All new servo savers and arms. Every thing in here is brand new.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4018/4514198636_ce425cff13.jpg

The radio is tested and the truck has all three gears in forward and reverse. The steering works. Strapped in a battery and test drove the chassis. The mechanical speed control will take some getting used to.

I have been busy with re-storing the Bruiser. Here is a list of what i have done.

I replaced all of the original 3mm Flange Nuts, 3x8mm Self Tapping Screws, 3mm Round Head Screw, and 5mm Ball Connectors with identical new genuine Tamiya parts. I removed the transmission to replace the
worn grommets. While I had the transmission out, I removed the stock clutch and installed the aluminum one piece spur gear. I re-installed the transmission using new repro grommets and the used replacement
motor plate #4305147 I won on ebay. The transmission is snug now. I replaced the missing Rubber Dust Protector and (A 4) bracket inside the radio box. I also replaced the battery tray (A 3).

Well, I may have an ESC on the way for the Bruiser. It is a vintage Novak reversible 610-HRV ESC. We shall see when it shows up. Hopefully I did not buy a dud...

Anyone ever own one of these?

The suspension is pretty soft and it allows for some good articulation, so I'm happy with the leaf spring change and U-bolt flip mod. The mechanical speed control is working, but it is very primitive, and does not offer anything close to precise control. The ESC that I plan on dropping in arrived yesterday. Hopefully, the addition of an ESC, will be an improvement in performance too. At least I will have some brakes....

Nice job. I have a number of Bruisers that I have fixed up over the past 6 years or so. I've also built a couple from scratch that have never been run. I will probably be selling one of the new builts. One is a Bruiser and another is a Mountaineer. The bodies are NAKED... Sorry didnt mean to jack your thread. NICE WORK!

Thank you Aaron. I always wanted me one... now I finally have me one and it is awesome!!! I wish I could afford another but, they command some silly amounts of money, so this one will have to keep me satisfied for a while. When they are re-released I will be the first in line for one though. :Tamiya1:

Recently I saw a thread on another forum where someone had a problem with some Imex G-Hawgs.
After reading this thread I went and checked my truck just for ha ha's and what do you know, mine have the same problem. NOT COOL....

I bought two sets NIP off eBay and each package had one tire that was molded incorrectly. I contacted IMEX :telephone: and after some social engineering, a few e-mails, and using this photo as proof of the problem... I was able to get the tires replaced. I still have the other two unique tires and two normal spares. I do not know why the tires were made and packaged like that.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4069/4539161396_0839abc327_b.jpg

**UPDATE**

Well, it's been a while, so let's dust off this thread and update a few things. Okay, tires... I now have a matching set of 4 IMEX G-Hawgs mounted on the ol' Bruiser. It was a bit of an ordeal, but they did send me a replacement set free of charge.

Now, earlier I said I was going to install a vintage Novak reversible 610-HRV ESC, but that did not happen. The ESC worked like a charm, but I ended up installing it into another one of my Tamiya vehicles. :D I have not driven the truck in a few months, but I did get the servo extension to install an ESC in the Bruiser. That brings me to today. Soooo, I received another vintage speedo in the mail yesterday afternoon...

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4090/5061291705_13107f27ed_b.jpg

I just finished installing a used Tekin Titan high-power forward/reverse pro speed control in the truck. It has no motor limit on a single engine and can handle dual motors down to 12 turns. Input power is 6-10 cells. It has a 0 to 4 second adjustable reverse delay and a reverse lockout for racing applications. It also has a pretty nice motor brake. Slows the truck down in a hurry, without locking up the wheels.

Now, after installing all new connectors and bench testing it to make sure it actually worked, I made up a mount out of some scrap lexan. I stuck the ESC it in front of the battery, just above the transmission. It is a tight fit under the bench seat of the cab, but it fit in there pretty nicely IMHO. I left all the stock MSC bits and it's servo in place so it can easily be swapped back in a couple of minutes if I want to switch it back and go mudding or something. :p Let's check out my handy-work.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4150/5061902786_ba5ca89470_b.jpg

INSTALLED!
It's a close fit, but it should get plenty of airflow to the heat-syncs, and keep things running cool.

Thanks for taking a look.

**update**

Twenty-six & a half years ago...

Tamiya was continuing on the three-speed tradition started in 1981 with the Hilux and they sought to improve upon the concept by adding a bigger RS-750H motor, a clutch in the transmission, bigger tires and wheels, softer suspension, and a steel ladder frame.

The Tamiya Bruiser is back!

That’s right, the truck that has been sought after since it was discontinued is back and better than ever. This isn’t an exact replica of the truck however. It may look the same but after taking a look you’ll see that it has new axles that feature a new housing and a lockable differential. The original Bruiser had a straight axle with no differentials and one-way bearings in the front to allow it to turn better. Another change is in the power. The new truck uses a 540 size motor while the other had a large 750 size motor to make it go. The metal ladder type chassis retains the original layout but this time comes with a black-finished surface instead of the metal coating.

The team of tamiyablog.com had the chance to the see and drive the new Bruiser re-release at the Nuremberg Toy Fair 2012. Our first observation was that the new gearbox drives similarly quiet as the old one and shifts gears very smoothly. Also although not many changes have been made at the steering (at a first glance we only noticed new steering knuckles) it seems to respond better and turn quite sharper which is probably also because of the differentials. Another observation was that it doesn’t have front free drive wheel hubs any more (as they aren’t really needed with a diff) and so climbing in reverse is significantly improved. The tires of the 2 running prototypes seemed also a bit softer then the old ones and the tires of the demonstration chassis were significantly softer. The new gearbox is shorter and elastically mount only in the rear (front mount is stiff) and it has 2 lugs which aren’t used, so maybe Tamiya has more future plans for it? Also in the end there is a rod which at first glance has no function but possibly is for easier servo rod alignment. The differentials have a screw and thread on the upper side which is probably for locking them.

:What:

From what we understood from a Japanese employee the box won’t have blisters and that there won’t be a Multi Function Controller for it, the runners in the fair had just both TLU-01 and TLU-02 light units. The decal sheet has 4 blue squares to possibly cover the side bar screws, weird it didn’t have 6 or 8 for all the screws. All in all we were extremely satisfied by this unexpected re-release and the amount of important but well hidden improvements.
