View Full Version : Rather pre-sale technical question actually

I am pretty new with Tamiya trucks but I am about to make an order and since I hate to wait I rather buy everything in one go ..
This is my current shopping list - maybe someone can take a look if that is actually all you need (or don't need but want to :D )
Tamiya Knight Hauler US Truck 56314
Tamiya Box Semi-Trailer 56302
RC Motorized Support Legs 56505
RC Multi Function Control Unit - Tractor Truck 56511
RC Truck Aluminum Rear Wheels 56509
RC Truck Aluminum Front Wheels 56508
RC Telescopic Antenna 56507
RC Tractor Truck Animal Guard 56506
RC Tractor Truck Oil Shock (2) 56503
The Oil Shock I assume is a set of two shocks, so I would require 3 sets for the truck, right ? Do you put a set into the semi trailer as well (or can do or does it make sense at all)
Same with alloys for the trailer ?
I must admit I don't have a clue whatsoever, but I just hate waiting and therefore want to buy everything I need in one go ... (even have a guy for a decent paintjob already lol).
Another question I have is in regards to the remote stuff ...
I have a modification for the trailer in mind which means I probably need a channel for that ...
What 6 channel remote can I use and what do I need for this (like servo - batteries etc.)
Any help is really appreciated ....

Your list looks good.
You forgot the light set for the trailer though.
Aluminum wheels are a pricey proposition. You will need four sets of the rear wheels. I have both the Tamiya brand wheels and the GPM. The GPM rears are all aluminum as opposed to the Tamiya ones that are just the front side. You also get an extra set of tires when you buy the tamiya ones
The oil dampers are nice but not really needed.
I have the bull bar but have never used it cause it's kinda ugly, especially on a Knight Hauler.
The telescopic antenna is a toss up. Not really needed and it doens't look very scale.
You only need a four channel radio to operate the MFU. Make sure it has non digital trims.

I would use a Futaba 6 channel radio for the extra channels you might need. Futaba makes a 6 channel ground freq. radio that is not one of the computerized models. I am using a Futaba Skysport 6 model T6YG in my semi right now. This radio comes with servos, nicads and a charger for the nicads.
I agree that the oil filled shocks are not necessary for the semis nor are the aluminum rims. The rims just add more cost to the truck. The brush guard looks like something from Australia and not something from the US in my opinion. :Tamiya1:

Hiya - thanks for the info :)
I already scrapped the idea of oil shocks and animal guard already - doesn't fit my first project at all anyway :)
The post was a second after I have decided that I want one, now I have actually thought about it thoroughly :Tamiya1:
I gonna check out the Futuba ...
I assume you need one channel for forward, backward - one channel for left, right - two channel for MFU ? So I could hook up two more channel for gizmo's ?

Err ... Futaba T6YG seems to be vanished from the globe .. where can you buy them ?
Are those compatible ?

What do I have to look for when buying radio systems ?

:sorry: I did not know that Futaba had discontinued that model. I have to ask if you are located in the US or not? Radios you linked to are not legal in the US but are overseas. You need a radio that DOES NOT have digital trims. The MFC will not work with the newer computer type radios. Airtronics makes an FM model that is not a computer model that works well for the semis. I am seeing lots of these in the States now. The Spektrum radios do not work with the MFC unit either-digital trims!!
Hooking up extra servos or switches is just a matter of plugging them into the extra channels in the receiver. Receiver has places for 6 or 7 channels depending upon make and model. There are switches on the transmitter to control these channels.

illegal ? lol .. I am in the UK ...
What about 40/35Mhz and 2.4 Ghz channel - does this matter or is it really just a matter of analog trims ?

You have to have the analog trims because there are certain trim and stick movements that get you extra features out of the MFU

Gomjaba,
I got your PM over at RCCA but for some reason it will not let me reply. I will get you trailer dimensions tomorrow when I go down in my dungeon to work on my rig.
I also use the Futaba Skyport 6 and it works great for me. I think it was discontinued shortly after I got mine last year or at least Tower Hobbies quit stocking it which they frequently do with items that dont sell very well. I chose it for the analog trims and also because it had the 2 extra channels in case I ever add any additional functions to it. Finding another could be tough but not impossible.

I just found a place where I could get one . However, it says its mode 1 but I prefer mode 2 - According to the seller the mode can be changed. As far as I know this is not possible as the mode is factory preset .. Is this different with this one and the mode can really be changed ?

A mode 1 can be converted to mode 2 as long as you're comfortable taking the back off the radio and swaping parts on the left and right stick assemblies. To describe it simply, you have to remove the "ratchet" parts from the existing throttle stick and swap them with the self centering pieces from the other side. Then you simply plug your ESC into the correct spot on the reciever to match up with the new throttle stick. It's really harder to describe than to do, there are just some small springs and screws involved. A digital pic or two to confirm parts location before starting might be helpful if you've never worked inside a radio before.
Hope this helps

The animal guard won't fit the Knight Haulers front bumper without modification.:sorry:

I like the look of the 3Racing aluminum wheels. You have around $100 in a set for the tractor. The place on ebay that sells them is Dinball or something like that.

Gomjaba,
If you want self centering sticks all around just send Futaba an email and they will send you the parts and instructions on how to do it youerself. I just did this and they are sending the parts free of charge. Nice huh.
