I took a dremel and cut off the sides and then trimmed down the end around the transfer case. To give it more ground clearance I bent it to contour around the transfer case. I think it looks much better!

Trimming and bending the skid plate required a dremmel, file and a littie sanding. I covered the areas not getting cut with several layers of tape and used this as my guide. The skid plate still protects the tranny as intended and the bend around the transfer case keeps the truck from hanging up better than the stock form does.:Tamiya1:

Hmm, does it really work that good? The lowest point from the skid is just like the one as stock...

To be Honest i don't see the point?
If it's that much in the way take it off! i did and have had absoutely no problems, have left the plastic guard on round the uj.

The way i see it and correct me if i'm wrong (which i probably am) if i was bashing round on rocks at 2000mph then i'd need a skid plate but i'm not so i don't. I was thinking about making the plastic piece that covers the uj out of metal just proud of the bottom of the gearbox to stop any rubbing that i might get.
(hope that makes sense)

your not gaining any ground clearance with this mod be getting rid of material that can get stuck on rocks and what not.

It's not really the cutting off of the sides that does anything, but the bend in the tailend of the skid-plate that protects the trans as intended while increasing the ground clearance in that area of the rear drive shaft and still maintaining the function of the piece.

I would believe this mod to be usefull in the rough. Even though it does not help raise the lowest point of the vehicle it makes it smaller, which in effect helps the ground clearance.
DREADY, a skidplate is usefull even if you do not use it as crasch protection when going fast. Many use them to help slide the vehicle over an obstacle as they are generally flat.

it lets you slide onto things. any idiot can see this mod isnt about ground clearance, but rather taking a flat edge and making it rounded so that it slide up and over instead of getting stuck.its alot like a rock bar on the front bumper. angled metal slides up on things better than a flat piece of metal. i think this is a brilliant mod. hopefully tamiya sees this and uses it in thier design. i however will not be modding mine because i put a 2 inch lift on my truck so clearance isnt a problem.

I cut the sides off so I could bend the tail-end of the skidplate to gain ground clearance in that area, while still protecting the transmission as the designers intended.
