Hey fellow rc junkies! I'm new here and have a question about radio selection. What do ya'll use and do you think there would be a problem with using a Futaba 6EX six channel for my High lift?

For the High Lift, no problem, although I doubt it will work with the MFC-02.

I use a Futaba 3 channel radio but then I do not use the MFU with my F-350.

If you plan on using the MFU you would need a 4 channel radio with analogue trims. The MFU utilises various trim settings in order to change the function of the channel and for that to work smoothly you would need analogue trims. Having said that, any 4 channel with analogue trims that is OK for ground use would be ok.

If you do not plan on using the MFU any 3 channel radio that allows you to set the third channel in three steps would suffice. There are advice here on this forum on how to convert a 3 channel radio that only allows the third channel to be set at the end points (two steps) to a three step channel.

Hey Mouton, I have a 3pm fs pro w/ synth. can I make that specific model work? I am unable to operate the search feature in this forum for some reason, probably ignorance, so I was not able to find the advice you were speaking of.

ROBSRYD, you can make it work. As it is you can only set the third channel on that transmitter to either of the endpoints. Following the advice in the thread I mentioned will allow for enpoind-neutral-endpoint, which is what you want. It is here in the same section, a couple of threads down and the sixth post:

I use another Futaba radio that allows me to do that without modification.

which is? I have been out of the loop for quite some time now and wish to know if the 6ex and my 3pm fs pro will work.

Regarding how to get your 3PM setup for changing gears, please read my previous post and check out the post in the link. You do need to modify your 3PM transmitter as per the instructions. The 6EX is a air model radio, which means that they most often they are not allowed for ground use. If your 6EX is not indended for ground use I would not recommend you to use it. About it's ability to control the car it would work perfectly. The throttle, does however not self center and the "gear lever" will not stay in gear as that will self center. If you have a 6EX that is ok for ground use you can change the way the left stick self centers. There is another thrread on this forum describing such a procedure.

I use two transmitters for my threespeds. For my Hilux and Knight Hauler I use the old JR 4 ch stick radio that was bought together with the Hilux back in the early 80's. For my F-350 I use a Futaba 3PKB. It has a stepless third channel and can be setup to show the actual servo throw on the display, thus seeing what gear I am in.

Mouton, I'm not really crazy about modifying my 3pm, not that I'm not capable. Just so you know, I am a child of the eighties and remember when the Tamiya hot shot was the car to have. I've had the original RC10, Losi JRX2, blackfoot and so on. So when I saw the release of the high lift I went apesh!t. I had been out of the hobby for about ten years, then dived back into it with a Savage, then a Associated NTC3, buggy and now the high lift. Anyway, I am very grateful for your time in helping me figure out which radio to go with. Earlier today I contacted Futaba and found that I could modify the left stick with two parts I coud order so the stick will self center. As for ground use, the system I am looking at is 2.4 ghz so if the freq. is the issue I don't think that will be a problem. I tried to look up your 3PKB and could not find anything. I am not interested in the MFU, I just want to spend my money wisely. If I had it my way, I would spend $600 on the new Futaba 4 channel pistol grip radio, but its not available yet and my wife would put a contract on my head. I love pistol grips, although I have respect for stick being thats what I grew up using. If I have to go with a stick radio I want extra chanels so as to add rediculous things like a winch or something silly, or buy a plane or whatever. But, in my perfect world I would control it with a pistol. Send me more info on the radio you use and what it operates. Thanks, Rob

The 3PK/3PKB/3PKS are basically the same transmitter. It is also avaiable as a stick type transmitter and is then called 3VCS. 3PKS features a slightly new layout and increased memory and a revised largs scale brake mix setup. Here you can read more about the Futaba 3PK:
http://www.futaba-rc.com/radios/futk25.html

Keep in mind that this is a high-end transmitter (the "predecessor" to the upcoming 4PK) and that there are several cheaper options out there that will work just fine with a High-Lift (i.e. a Spectrum DX-3).

How could it be done with a DX-3? Sorry to bring up an old thread but i'm very interested in how to do it. If any one has done it and could show me how, i'd be very grateful.
