They are not needed on both sticks...It just makes it nicer especially when trying to activate certain features with the left stick, but it can be done. A shift gate makes it easier but doesnt totally solve the problem...

You need it on throttle and steering.

Most radios aside from the Futaba 4vwd dont have the self center on the left stick. It's an AM radio so is more susceptible to glitches than a FM radio would be. Most are converted plane/heli radios. Most of these can be converted by radio manufacturer or can be done by yourself if you are comfortable doing it. I've just learned to deal with mine not centering.

Another option would be to possibly pay your local hobby shop to convert

My plan is to switch the springs/ratchet system/etc. so that my x-axis will not self-center (gear shift), and the y-axis will (throttle). That way, it'll be easier to hold a gear. If I get a shift-gate, I'll keep it as it is now, most likely. Bringing it to center using the shift-gate as a guard should be easy enough, as I can do it decently right now. I can't wait to get a job again and get the MFU, trailer, and all the goodies to go along with it. Sadly, I'll have to order online (like to support the LHS's, but $450 CAN for the MFU is the best they can do? I can get MFU, trailer, motorized legs, light kits, etc. for about $550 shipped online). Can't wait to see this thing all built! Anyone have any colour ideas for me? I've stopped building because I need to paint now, and I'm undecided...

I have made a simple modification to my Futaba 4VWD transmitter. Tower Hobbies sells a ratchet, part number LHX435 and the screw that secures it inside the transmitter, part number LHX436. Even though this part says it's for the 2D transmitter it can be placed inside the 4VWD directly as the support post is already there and the gimbals have the teeth for the ratchet function.

Once the ratchet tab is installed, you can reduce the tension on the gimbal via the adjustment screw that holds the centering spring. With this set up I have the best of both worlds. The left gimbal now has the ratchet action so you can control the speed better plus it centers when in the middle. I use this set up with my MFU's as centering is an important function. I also use a shift gate so shifting and staying in gear is no problem. The ratchet action plus the shift gate keeps the control stick in gear.

I think the $2.00 investment is well worth it. I hope this will help other members.
