View Full Version : Why we don't have 2wd to 4wd shifts on Hi-lift?

I'm just curious why tamiya removed the 2wd to 4wd shifts on Hilux from the orginal? Is it to make it a 2speed vs 3speed or the complexity of the tranny?

Why not make 3 speed with servo activated 4wd with a flick of a switch :Tamiya1: ?

I think that doesn’t make sense to manufacture a 2wd gear box. You just could let the front diff without unblocking. The old diecast gear box was 2-4wd, only the 1st gear was 4wd. It was in the old times when all the RC cars were 2wd and 4wd was an innovation. The axles didn’t have differentials and you could give one way to the front wheels.
Nowadays Tamiya have fixed this with good differentials and the option to block them just with a screw worm.

I think it would be neat to see the return of the 2wd to 4wd transmission myself. You could zip around in 2wd & save some battery life (in theory I guess) then slap it into 4wd when you get stuck !

I agree, I think it would be cool to do remote 2-to-4 wheel drive. I would think the engineering would be easy to integrate into the 3 speed transmission. Just need to add on another slide bar and servo to engage and dis-engage power going to the front axle.

maybe someone like RC4WD could make something like it's disconnect feature for the R2 tranny.

I have to say that I totally agree with the plan, actually I'm sure RC4WD can make it for us. They actually already produce a 3speed gearbox with that function. But that's freaking expensive http://rc4wdstore.com/product_info.php?products_id=512
300 dollars :O

I'd like to see it in all gears, 2 and 4wd like a 1:1

What he said. The RC4WD one is 2WD in 1st and 2nd, and then automaticly goes to 4WD in third. I would like to see the ability to flip a channel on a remote and that moves a servo to then allow power to go to the front axle.

Really it wouldn't be that hard. The gear coming off the 3 speed would be perminatly connected to the shaft that goes to the rear axle. Then, just like in the transmission, you would have a gear with 3 or 4 splines sticking out that are attached to the shaft that goes to the front axle. You would flip the channel on the remote and the servo would pull that gear up against the rear shaft gear and then engage the front axle. Bam, you have 4WD in all 3 gears.

Thats cool, but I would raither have it be part of the transmission.

If tamiya build the next Hi-lift with FWD, RWD, or AWD on the elevator channel like the shift gates but flipped 180 degrees i'd buy one :first:

Good plan now how do i go about building such a device?

I really don't think this would be a great operating device, nice for show, but not much of anything else.

When you run the Highlift in 2WD only, there is so much drag from the front axle (sounds wierd eh?) that it'll go slower than with 4WD. If I remove the shaft then I'll probably loose half my speed. The truck is really designed to work with 4WD, it's quite heavy eh? Same would go with a 4WD buggy or such. Even though they are lighter, they were designed for the drivetrain to balance out. You could do it but it'll put un-nessassary stress on the motor.

Don't get me wrong, it can be done, but the issue I'm seeing is the wieght, you'll need a decent powered motor, and it'll handle horribly and spin around a lot.

I totally agree and the fact that the 4WD were born, In understand that could be an interesting feature for Crawling, but how many people around the world do that an finally this is not a Crawling, just a "look like real 4WD truck" So again this is for other purposes, perhaps under tha point of view of the " a new feature to play with" Ok go on I will buy one, but doesn't make sense if you consider to save battery or so probably you will go in contrary. Just try an Bruiser in 2WD....

well if it had twist lock front hubs then it could work, but $$ cost effectivness would not be feasable

RC4WD has the version on thier R2 tranny that can lock and unlock but it is built for crawling and generally to be locked in gear

I would think all :Tamiya1: fans would support this idea but i guess not. I'm sure Tamiya has engineers to fix minor issues and etc. Just trying to bring more ideas to the table.

I feel these "new ideas" are what makes Tamiya collectables and what I consdier the father of RC cars.

I'm in the planning (dreaming!) stages of a REAL 4WD gearbox for one of my High Lifts. By "REAL" I mean a gearbox running into a transfer case that changes 2WD to 4WD with high and low ratios in both. Just like the real thing. Put aside battery life and motor power 'cause these things can be fixed. From a "scale" point of view, this would make "absolute realism" absolutely real!

I'm with you here, the High Lift is a great truck but making it a true scaler would just put it over the top!
