View Full Version : 3 speed drifter?

I was wondering if a 3 speed drifter would be something worth looking into? Many 1:1 drifters initiate a drift by overpowering the wheels, and I have noticed that even with my Semi truck I can kick the rear tires out by shifting from low to high gear in a sharp turn, so would this same idea work on a drift car? I think if someone built this they would need to do some tests to determine wether 2wd or 4wd would work the best, but I think this would be more realistic and give a more realistic appearance to the car while it drifts. Thoughts?

For scale appearance it would be a killer! But for performance it might really not add that much more than headaches. Keep in mind that an RC drift car does not need another gearing just to make the tires spin.

A 1:1 drifter, although powerfull still needs that gear change for optimal power output thru a "lap". An electric touringcar does just fine with a single gear ratio since the optimal power output kan be achieved in one single gearing. Just apply more power in th eearly stage of a turn and the rear comes out.

The gearboxes for Tamiya's threespeeds all have high reduction ratios. If you really want the high revs transfered to the wheels just get a high rpm motor. They have enough torque to first overpower the wheels to set it adrift and then keep it drifting.

You should be the first to ask DrKucho if he can made some Trail Doctors in "D" compound! :rasp:

There are many methods that 1:1 drifters utilize; pulling the E-brake, poppping the clutch, transitioning weight (inertia drift), etc.

R/C drifting doesn't utilize the same methods (drifting rwd R/C is very difficult). Too much is happening on such a smaller scale that just controlling the throttle response is more than enough.
