Hi all

I came across this site while just searching for anything to do with the tamiya blazer, and finding a dedicated 3speed site seems perfect.

I have had my Blazer for nearly 20 years now, and it has spent the last fifteen or so in the loft due to work and life in general. Now with a bit more spare time on my hands and far more experience in making all sorts of stuff, I decided to get it out and do it up a bit.

So I have made a new extended roll cage, and added bigger leaf springs to give it more height and as I wanted to add bigger tyres I have recently set about making some hubs to fit it and take 2.2 tyres. I’m in the UK so spares seem very sparse most being in the US, but I tend to prefer to make stuff oppose to buy it if I can. Obviously some stuff has to be bought, but lots can be made. No doubt i will have questions as i do stuff so will perster folk here for answers

:) Don

Hi all

Now the silly season is just about over, I will sort some pictures out of my progress so far.

One question about the tiny bolts that hold the wheels on the blazer and brusier type trucks, does anyone know what thread size they are, as I need to get some longer ones to hold my wheels I made on.

Hilux and blazer are 2mm
(IIRC)
If you have trouble getting them, let me know and i'll tell you where to get them from (UK)
although they are a little too long

Hi m8

Any info on where to get the bolts would be much appreciated, as I need them a tad longer than standard to fit my wheels on I made. I have also included a few pictures.

I have butchered it a tad and you could say its more bruiser like now than blazer in the chassis, but I wanted more ground clearance, and suspension that worked, as the standard had no give at all so it used to bounce around when landing. Also the steering I used to find was a tad unresponsive due to all the linkage, so I plan on adding a boxed servo up front just under the motor so steering is direct.

I changed the leaf springs for F350 ones and added the bruiser leaf spring mounts, but they are really more to hold everything in line than do much work. As the blazer had no mounts for large dampers, I made a bit of carbon fibre sheet to attach them to. Now when you drop it, it no longer bounces as the springs and dampers absorb it all.

This picture really just shows the modified bruiser shock mount, which I added to so the axle now sits at an angle. I cast them in carbon fibre reinforced resin to make sure they were nice and strong. You can also see the back of the wheel hub I made. As I was a tad concerned about putting all the load and stress through just those three little bolts, I recessed the back so the whole lip of the axle hub now sits in the actual wheel so all the stress is now transferred directly to the wheel hub, not through those little bolts.

This is just to show the axle held in place at an angle, and as you can see the drive shaft is now just about straight when leaving the axle.

I still have quite a lot to do, as I want to dump the old large plastic box and add a smaller box to hold the receiver and other small bits so I can attach a larger gel battery for longer running time. As I live near the sea, I will take it down there quite a bit in the summer and run it on the beach, mud and in the water so a longer running time would be ideal.

Hi again

I ran out of pictures so added a couple of the body.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/don_jarr/blazere.jpg
I replaced the old plastic roll cage and bumpers with a custom built ones. I have also started to add more detail than it came with, but that’s really just for show.

Just a shot of the back, which I flattened off, so I can attach a small winch and jerry cans to. I also added a storage box on the back, and will add stuff like fire extinguishers and other bits you would find on a real truck as I go.

I also decided to redo the driver’s position so it had a proper dashboard and centre console so I could add gear and handbrake levers.

I am also making some wheel arch extensions as I think the body now looks a tad narrow on the larger wheels.

More pictures as it progresses.

:) Don

welcome aboard
Those are some nice chassis mods, but the body stuff you did is really impressive :first:

I did this to my blazers steering
