I know both are Knight Hauler Metallic Specials - but what separates the two? I have the 56316, which makes me wonder whether the 56315 is a full operation kit?

56315 just comes with a metal plated body .. apart of that it is the same as the 56316 ...

Both are metallic specials (metal plated bodies). They are both truck-only kits. Gomjaba did point me in an interesting direction, has the 56315 even been released outside Japan?
I know Japanese dealers only list the 53616 now, but Tamiya's Japanese web site only mentions the 56315 and not the 56316. Since they appear identical, I am interested since they have been given separate numbers, indicating some sort of difference.

56315 was never brought into the states.
I have no idea of the differences. I didn't even know 56315 existed until this thread.

Perhaps one of them had the full option, I mean MFU, radio...etc, only available in Japan

mcovalsk, you nailed it! Even though I was under the impression that both where truck-only kits since there are not photos of neither the MFU nor a transmitter it is a full operation truck!
It must surely be intended for limited sales in Japan only as it is only mentioned in Japanese:
http://www.tamiya.com/japan/products/56315knight/index.htm
When browsing the English language version of Tamiya's Japanese web site its gone:
http://www.tamiya.com/english/rc/rcitem/kit/kit56301.htm
And there one also finds the answer to what hides behind 56313, a Full operation (regular) Knight Hauler, also exclusive for the Japanese market. Consequently the 56317 is a full operation Scania, which is also listed on the English language version of the web site. The 56308 that lacks a picture is the King Hauler Metallic Special, that was on the market a few years ago.
What bugs me now is that I never looked at the price tag, which should have pointed me towards the full option trucks.
