Hi Guys

I'm New here and need some help please.

I've got an old 1982 3speed hilux pickup, and while doing some research on restoring it I found out how valuable this old Tamiya product is. While doing this I saw the New Hilux High Lift and went out and bought one today, just had to have it. Here in South Africa, with our curancy being so weak, its quite expensive. I'm Only 25, so it was a whole month's paycheck for me, but I'm a big Hilux fan! Own a real 1996 DC 4x4 Hilux as well.

Well to get to the question:

I have never painted a RC model before, and I think for the new high-lift to keep value, I want to do the paint scheem as on the box. I'm a little scared of making a mess of it, and need some advice.

1. Should I prepare the body in any way? Primer? Sand down the little mold lines?

2. Should I just paint it with Tamiya TS colours as specified in the manual?

3. Its 2 tone, but on the box the top part looks Black, but the manual says Dark Mica Blue, what is it?

4. The little cromed parts like water sills above doors, door handles, tailgate handles, should they be hand painted with a brush or sprayed? If sprayed, hoe do you mask something so small?

5. Must there be a clear cote applied after colour for a gloss finish?

Hope you guys can help me out.

After this new one is complete, I'm starting the restoration on the old one. Need a propshaft set, new body( going to try and use a new high lift front body), decals, battery & remote.

Regards

Here is a link to another tamiya enthusiast website. Here, Moosey takes you step by step through painting a Mountaineer (hilux body)

http://tamiya101.com/article_tamiya_mountaineer_build1.asp

the difference between that body and the one you have is that all your details are separate so there will be less problems masking small details - all the chrome bits are probably already chrome (the dark chrome that is boxart)

Thats a great write up by Moosey but I have to say 7 cans of color coat is a lot of paint. You can usually do it with two.
